Mowing the Right of Way

Weed abatement occurred in parts of North Fair Oaks over the past week. Mowing will continue in East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks and parts of Redwood City in the coming weeks. If you have tall grasses growing on the Right of Way near your home, please contact us so we can add your area to the weed abatement list.

Pulgas Hot Tap

The hot tap was completed at the Pulgas Valve Lot successfully connecting BDPL-5 with the rest of the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. The hot tap process allows the Contractor to connect the new pipeline to an active pipeline without stopping the flow of water. A new valve is attached to the existing pipeline at the location that the new pipeline is going to connect. Then the specialized hot tap machine removes a section of the existing pipe inside the new valve which is then closed to prevent water from flowing out of the new hole. After the hot tap process is complete the new pipe is connected to the new valve completing the connection of the new pipe to the active pipe without stopping the flow of water. At 60in this is the largest hot tap preformed during this project.

Drill Rig Delivered

Today a large drill rig weighing 200,000lbs and standing nearly 80ft tall was delivered to the Bennett Road staging area. This drill rig will create the tunnel shaft in preparation for the micro tunnel.

Below is a video slidewhow of the drill rig being delivered to the site.

The tunnel shaft will be installed using a secant pile method to create a water tight shaft. Walls of the tunnel shaft are constructed by the sequenced construction of overlapping, reinforced concrete piles installed in a top-down process by drilling using the large rig. The secant pile operation is expected to be completed in June. The micro-tunnel will follow the completion of the tunnel shaft.

Please see below for the construction notice regarding this work.

Mowing, Fencing, Replacing Curb, Gutter and Sidewalks

Warm spring days are in full force and so are the grasses and weeds along the Right of Way. We have received several calls regarding the high weeds in the Right of Way and we are mobilizing resources to begin mowing those areas. We will begin mowing in East Palo Alto in the next week or so followed by areas of North Fair Oaks. If the Right of Way in your area needs mowing please call us so that we can schedule weed abatement. You can reach us at 800-571-6610.

Fencing is moving along in Redwood City between Johnson and King St. As we complete those permit areas in Redwood City, we will continue fencing into the North Fair Oaks area. You will receive a door hanger at least one week in advance notifying you that we are approaching your way. This notice will include a map of your approximate fence lines and heights, and a fence waiver that needs to be signed if you have not already.  If you have any questions about your fence please call us when you receive your door hanger notice and we can address all of your concerns.

Over the past several weeks the Contractor has completed many of the remaining curb, gutter, and sidewalk paving in Redwood City. You may notice the new sidewalks on Roosevelt, Johnson, King, Hudson, Oak, and Madison and James Streets. Yesterday, crews moved to Bay Road to continue the curb and gutter work prior to final paving.

UPDATE: Oak tree & Bay Road

The tunnel under the oak tree was successfully completed and the pipe installed! Crews are now beginning pipe installation to connect the tunnel to the rest of the pipeline. This connection work will take several weeks and the 24 hour dewatering operation will continue to reduce the ground water in the trenches. Once this connection is made only one segment remains to be installed in Pulgas Open Space before pipe installation is complete.

PLEASE NOTE: the Right of Way is an active construction zone with heavy machinery and open trenches. For your safety, there is no public access. If you would like specific updates or photos from the field, we welcome your feedback. Please email us at baydivision@sfwater.org.

Bay Road temporary paving was completed this week, significantly improving the road surface. Drivers should still follow all traffic controls and speed limits. The final curb and gutter restoration work and paving will commence soon. Crews are currently working to  complete curb and gutter work in Redwood City.

Fence installation continues in Redwood City between Johnson and King Streets.

Menlo Park Boys and Girls Club restoration is almost complete:

Cordilleras Site Preparation

Work has begun on the BDPL5 Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project! Crews have been out over the past several days setting up the staging area in the median of Bennett Rd. The tunnel will launch from this location and continue under the road and Cordilleras Creek. The Contractor installed K-rail (concrete barriers), fencing with privacy screening, and traffic control signs to delineate the construction area from traffic. Below are a few pictures of the construction activity.
